Objective: To carry out a systematic review of the literature on radiotherapy treatment with the Lattice technique to identify, describe, and organize the currently available evidence on studies evaluating its efficacy and safety.
Methods: A PubMed/Medline search was designed for retrospective and prospective experimental and observational studies conducted in adults and children with cancer treated with the Lattice or GRID-3D technique to assess efficacy and safety outcomes. The study selection process followed the PRISMA guidelines. The results were summarized in narrative form and tables.
Results: Nine of the eleven included studies were observational. Most patients in these studies had head and neck cancer, with the predominant histology being sarcomas. One identified uncontrolled experimental study evaluated the Lattice technique in prostate cancer patients, while another quasi-experimental study included lung cancer patients. The proposed schemes, doses, and techniques were very varied.
Conclusion: Lattice is a promising technique for local and symptom control, as reported in mostly small observational studies. However, experimental studies are needed comparing this technique with current management standards to obtain evidence with methodological rigor on its efficacy and safety outcomes for its implementation in routine practice.
