Retrospective analysis of the Revista Colombiana de Cancerología (1941-2003)

Objective: To evaluate the quality of articles published in the journal of the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología E.S.E., from 1941 until September 2003.
Materials and Methods: A descriptive study was carried out in which issues of the Journal of the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología E.S.E., dating from 1941 to 2003 were identified and reviewed. In accordance with criteria set forth in the Ibero-American Cochrane Collaboration for the selection of randomized controlled trials, issues corresponding to the last 5 years (1998-2003) were identified and reviewed. Due to the fact that no were found randomized controlled trials in issues from the five past years, it was decided to carry out a manual review of the journal throughout quality of the journal. These variables were analyzed with descriptive statistics using percentages and the results were presented in tables and charts.
Results: Forty-three published journals were identified, containing a total of 237 articles of which 45,5% correspond to original research; no clinically controlled assays, nor meta-analysis were found. The highest level of evidence studies included a quasi-experimental study and six cohort studies. Other studies identified dealt with case design and control, descriptive studies, case series and case studies. Most frequent subject mater dealt with public health and epidemiology (13,5%), head and neck cancer (10,4%), followed by uterine cancer (8,9%). Periodical publication has been uninterrupted since 2002.
Discussion: Analysis of the journal of the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología E.S.E. revealed its strengths as being: a long time publication, a format for the publication of cancer research in Colombia, independence from pharmaceutical companies and Internet access. Its weaknesses reflected the state of the cancer research in Colombia. It is the responsibility of the state and academic institutions to generate and sustain research which will have greater repercussions in the knowledge and design of health policies.
Conclusion: The number of high level studies was low, which made indexing difficult. Most issues were classified as featuring a limited range of subject matter; recomendations to improve the Journal and its impact are included.
